EL ACENTO "COCKNEY"

¿Habeis oído hablar de los acentos ingleses? El más conocido es el Cockney, que se caracteriza por el uso de rimas en el lenguaje diario.

La expresión "cockney" fue utilizada por primera vez en 1600 aunque anteriormente se utilizaban palabras similares para hablar de personas dedicadas al campo o poco instruidas.

En la actualidad es un acento típico británico de clases medias-bajas y consiste en reemplazar una palabra de uso frecuente por otra que rime y forme parte de una frase hecha. Por ejemplo, ¿sabeis qué significa "porky pies"?? en slang significa "lies", es decir, mentiras. Y como esta, hay cientos de expresiones...

El cockney es muy utilizado en el east-end, barrio típico londinense, también famoso por la serie EastEnders, telenovela que se emite desde 1985 y en la utilizan este tipo de expresiones.

Es un acento muy difícil de entender incluso para los propios británicos y, desde luego, no lo vais a ver en los libros de texto. Eso sí, si os interesa aprenderlo solo tenéis que vivir en el sureste de Londres una temporadita.

The expression "cockney" was employed for the first time in 1600, even though similar terms had been used before to generally define uneducated or rural people. 

Today it is a typical British accent mainly employed by lower middle and working classes. Generally speaking, it replaces frequently used words with rhyming slang. For example, do you know what "porky pies" means? In cockney slang it means "lies", and this is one out of countless examples. 

Cockney accent is widely employed in the East End, the eastern part of London. This is a well-known area thanks to the soap opera EastEnders, broadcasted in British TV since 1985, which has popularised cockney slang in the UK. 

It is doubtlessly one of the most difficult accents to undestand even for the British themselves. Needless to say, you will not be able to find it in textbooks. However, if you are interested in learning it properly you just need to spend some time living in southeast London.
